Chapter Twenty-Four

The house was far nicer than Jena had expected with plenty of lovely views from the rooms she’d spend any amount of time in.

The master bedroom was perfect. The color was the nice shade of blue with a king bed that was unmade as well as a bench at the end of it and a chaise in the corner next to a table.

Next door was the nursery which was a nature scene with fairies on the wall along with butterflies. There were three cribs and two change tables as well as two rockers.

“Is there something you want to change?” Sidony asked from behind her.

“No.” Jena went to the window and opened the shutters to peer out into the backyard. She was surprised to see women working in the yard to create a garden.

There were benches and other equipment just waiting to be set in place.

“The yard is very big,” Sidony said. “Part of it is being turned into a secret garden type thing from The Secret Garden. Apparently—”

“It’s one of my favorite stories. I always wanted to have a garden like that. Will there be a tree swing?”

“As per Jorja’s orders,” Sidony said.

Jena turned to face her finding the other woman watching her with dark eyes that were so like Jorja’s. Sidony hadn’t taken to her as fast as Casey had and Jena wondered if the woman even liked her.

“Is Kahlan still here?” Jena asked.

“Yes.”

“I’d like a word with her,” she said. “And I’d like you to be present.”

“As you wish,” Sidony said and removed a phone from her pocket. She made a call. “She’s on her way up.”

“Thank you.” Jena moved back into the bedroom. “Has Rue arrived?”

“She went out to get some other things, but she should be back soon. She said she left you a salad with chocolate shavings in the fridge.”

Jena nodded and the knock at the door claimed her attention. “Come in.”

The door opened and Kahlan stepped inside. “The house looks good,” Kahlan commented.

“Kahlan,” Jena said allowing the animal inside her to come to the fore.

“Yes?”

“Don’t ever use magic on me again without my permission,” Jena told her. “Next time tell me what I need to know.”

“You weren’t listening,” Kahlan replied. “Arguing with you would have wasted time we didn’t have. I told you the primary point of you being moved was to keep you safe.”

“Don’t do it again,” Jena told her. “If you do, you’re fired.”

“If she does, Jorja will eat her if you like,” Sidony said calmly.

“I’m not getting eaten,” Kahlan retorted, giving Sidony a cold look.

“Don’t find out,” Jena told her. “Now, call Rue and tell her to get back here. I want a shake.”

“You’re going to turn into a shake,” Kahlan told her. “The midwife is ready to see you when you’re ready.”

“I don’t need a doctor. I need a shake,” Jena told her coldly.

“Don’t be so petulant,” Kahlan replied. “Rue is on her way back with some good chocolate.”

“Why did she leave?” Sidony demanded. “Everything she needed was here.”

“She said some of the chocolate was tainted.
